Dr. Daniel Yergin, Chairman, CERA is a highly respected authority on international politics and economics and on energy. Dr. Yergin is a Pulitzer Prize winner and recipient of the United States Energy Award for “lifelong achievements in energy and the promotion of international understanding.” He is both a world-recognized author and a business leader, as Chairman of Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA). With 200 employees around the world, CERA is one of the world's leading consulting and research firms in its field.

His latest book, The Commanding Heights: The Battle for the World Economy , with Joseph Stanislaw, has received wide attention for its analysis and narrative of how the “world is changing its mind about markets and government.” The Wall Street Journal said, “No one could ask for a better account of the world's political and economic destiny since World War II.” It has been translated into 13 languages.  Dr. Yergin received the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for his work The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power , which became a #1 national best seller and was made into an eight-hour PBS/BBC series seen by 20 million people in the United States. The book has been translated into 12 languages. 

Dr. Yergin is a Trustee of the Brookings Institution and a member of the Committee on Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a member of the Board of the United States Energy Association and a member of the National Petroleum Council. He has also chaired the US Department of Energy's Task Force on Strategic Energy Research and Development. He is a Director of the US-Russian Business Council, the Atlantic Partnership, and the New America Foundation. Dr. Yergin received his BA from Yale University, and his PhD from Cambridge University, where he was a Marshall Scholar. He previously taught at the Harvard Business School and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

Mr. N. J. Nicholas Jr., Chairman, Board of Environmental Defense. Nicholas, who joined Time Inc. in 1964, held a number of executive positions during his thirty year career with the company. He was named president of Time Inc. in 1986 and served as co-chief executive officer of Time Warner Inc. until February 1992. Nicholas is a director of the Boston Scientific Corporation, Xerox Corporation and Time Warner Cable. He has served as a member of the board of Turner Broadcasting, Bankers Trust Company, Priceline and of the President's Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations and the President's Commission on Environmental Quality. Nicholas is also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Environmental Defense and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Nicholas attended Phillips Academy at Andover, Mass., received an A.B. degree magna cum laude in economics from Princeton University and an M.B.A. degree from the Harvard Business School.

Mr. James Ding, Chairman & Co-Founder of AsiaInfo. Mr. Ding served as Chief Executive Officer and president of AsiaInfo from May 1999 until April 2003 and has served as a member of the Board of Directors of AsiaInfo since the company's inception. He was Senior Vice President for Business Development and Chief Technology Officer from 1997 to 1999. Prior to that, Mr. Ding was the company's Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer from 1993 to 1997. Mr. Ding has been recognized as one of the Top 10 Chinese Entrepreneurs by Chinese Media, the 2002 Global Chinese Entrepreneur of the Year by BusinessWeek and a Global Leader for Tomorrow by World Economic Forum. Mr. Ding graduated with an MS from the Haas Business School, received his MS from UCLA, and holds a BS in Chemistry, Peking University, China.

Dr. Alexis Bell, Professor of Chemical Engineering at UC Berkeley, and Faculty Senior Scientist at LBNL. He holds a Sc.D. and a BS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Bell's achievements have been extensively recognized by his peers, and he has received numerous awards, including: The Curtis W. McGraw Award for Research from the American Association of Engineering Education; the Professional Progress and R. H. Wilhelm Awards from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers; the Paul H. Emmett Award in Fundamental Catalysis from the Catalysis Society; the National Academy of Engineering; Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1988); and the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Research in Homogeneous or Heterogeneous Catalysis from the American Chemical Society. In 2001, Dr. Bell was made an Honorary Professor at the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Janet X. Liu, Board Director and Vice General Manager of Beijing Investment Consultants, Inc. (BICI), where she advises and assists Chinese clients and government organizations in corporate reorganization, project finance, private placement, merger & acquisition, IPO and other finance-related corporate transactions. Dr. Liu has rich experience in corporate finance, investment and enterprise restructuring. She has joined China Science Commercial Hi-tech Corp., Ltd. and participated in hundreds of national research Project evaluations since 1989 for the National Science Committee. After joining BICI, Dr. Liu has been responsible for diagnosing large joint-venture enterprise, making long-term strategic planning, conducting investment research and devising enterprise restructuring. She has also supported many enterprises with valuable consultation and proposals in the field of investment and financing. She has been involved in stock issuing and listing of A share and H share for a number of large state-owned companies such as Jiangxi Copper Corporation Ltd. and Huaneng International Power. Dr. Liu received her B.S. degree in Physics from Zhongshan University and Ph.D. in Physics Science from University of Rochester. Dr. Liu is also a licensed attorney at law in China.

Dr. Zhi Gao, Professor of Chemistry, Fudan University, China. Dr. Gao was formerly a Visiting Professor at the University of Connecticut, the University of California Berkeley , and a Visiting Scientist at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London . She has been the Chair of the Chemistry Department and the Academic Committee at Fudan University , Vice Chair of the Shanghai Society of Chemistry and Chemical Industry, and Member of the Science and Technology Committee of the China Ministry of Education. Dr. Gao has received numerous awards including the China Ministry of Education Award in Science and Technology, the National Invention Award, and the Shanghai Significant Achievement Award in Science and Technology.

Mr. Kevin McMahon, Retired Partner, Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP. Mr. McMahon has over 40 years of experience in patent litigation, licensing, preparation and prosecution.  During his 17 years at Weil, Gotshal and Manges, where he co-founded the firm's patent litigation and counseling group, Mr. McMahon represented companies such as ExxonMobil, Pirelli, NMB Semiconductor, ST Microelectronics, United Healthcare subsidiary, Ingenix, and others in patent infringement litigation.  At WG&M, Mr. McMahon also represented clients in patent interferences and oppositions before the U.S. and European Patent Offices, and in intellectual property aspects of major corporate transactions.  His practice further included counseling clients on patent validity, enforceability and infringement issues, and on patent enforcement and licensing strategies. 

Before joining WG&M, Mr. and had been a partner in the New York patent boutique law firm where he counseled corporate clients on patent infringement and validity issues and represented them in license negotiations and other transactions.  He also practiced in ex-parte and contested matters before the U.S. and foreign patent offices.  

Previously, Mr. McMahon had been Chief Patent Counsel of Schlumberger Limited where he headed of 30 lawyer Patent Department that had responsibility for matters concerning the development, acquisition, protection, licensing, enforcement and use of technology and intellectual property rights for a worldwide company engaged in the oilfield services, semiconductor, electronic instrumentation, and computer-aided design/manufacturing industries.

Following his graduation from law school, Mr. McMahon was a patent attorney at Ing. C. Olivetti & C. SpA in Italy and became Patent Counsel of its U.S. operating company, where he initiated a successful program for licensing Italian developed manufacturing technology to companies in the U.S.

He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Electrical Engineering and earned his JD degree at Georgetown University.

Board of Directors

Mr. Victor Sprenger, CEO Accelergy Corporation. Sprenger's career spans over 37 years in the electronics, refining and chemical industries. Prior to joining  Accelergy, he spent over ten years in various management positions at Engelhard Corporation (acquired by BASF in June 2006).  Most recently, he was Group Vice President and General Manager for Engelhard's Process Technologies Group.  Prior to joining Englehard, Mr. Sprenger was Vice President of Electronic Materials at Macdermid, Inc. and also served as Vice President of Electronics at both Hercules, Inc., and Colight/Cugher.  He began his career with AT&T's (Western Electric) blue circle management training program. 

Mr. Sprenger holds a BS degree in industrial engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

Mr. William Chen, Co-Founder, Accelergy Corporation. Prior to founding Accelergy, Mr. Chen was the Founder and CEO of OnePage, Inc. an enterprise software company that was acquired by Sybase. Before OnePage, Mr. Chen was one of the Founders of Billpoint, Inc. an Internet payments company that was acquired by eBay. Mr. Chen has also held executive positions for Excite and Accenture, and was in sales and marketing for IBM.

Mr. William Chen serves on the Board of Directors and was President of the AAMA (Asia America Multi-Technology Association in Silicon Valley ) in 2005. He is a Board Director of the Harvard Business School 4A Club, and is also on the Advisory Board of the Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Florida. In 2003 the University of Florida honored him as the Clark Butler Entrepreneur of the Year.

Mr. Chen holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS from the University of Florida.

Dr. Bernie Bulkin, Former Chief Scientist at BP (British Petroleum). Bernie spent 19 years at BP and its predecessor, The Standard Oil Company, holding various positions in technology and business, including Chief Technology Officer and Director of Manufacturing, Supply, and Distribution. As BP's Vice President for Environmental Affairs, Bernie developed BP's clean fuels strategy and led BP's strategy and action plan on climate change. He helped to develop BP's thinking about sustainability, what it means in an extractive company, and the organizational demands of sustainability in a large company. He is the author of many papers on sustainability, climate change, transport, and the future of technology in the energy industry. Prior to BP, Bernie was an academic scientist and Professor at City University of New York and Polytechnic Institute for 18 years.

Bernie has published more than 100 papers and two books on such subjects as Raman spectroscopy, polymers, and liquid crystals. Bernie was Honorary Professor at the University of York from 1992-2003, and has been elected as a Fellow of New Hall, University of Cambridge. Bernie currently serves as Chairman of the Energy Advisory Board of SAIC, and is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of World ORT, the Board of Governors of Argonne National Laboratory, Board of Directors of UK CEED, the UK Government Sustainable Energy Policy Advisory Board, Vice Chair for Energy and Transport of the Sustainable Development Commission, and is a Trustee of the Charles Darwin Trust. Bernie is Fellow, Royal Society of Chemistry; Fellow, Institute of Petroleum; Fellow, Royal Society of the Arts; and Fellow of New Hall, Cambridge. He has received the Coblentz Award, the Oscar Foster Award in Science Education, Sigma Xi Distinguished Research Citation, and Gold Medal of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy.

Mr. Ira Ehrenpreis, General Partner, Technology Partners. Ira Ehrenpreis is a General Partner with Technology Partners. Ira leads Technology Partners' Cleantech investment practice, investing in Energy Technology, Water Technology, and Materials Science opportunities. He has worked for Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Juniper Partners venture capital firm.

Ira is the Co-Chairman of both the VCNetwork and the YVCA, two non-profit organizations comprising more than 1,000 venture capitalists. He is a Contributor to Nimmer on Copyright, the leading copyright treatise. Ira is also an active leader at Stanford University, where his contributions have included teaching the course on Venture Capital and serving on the Board of Visitors of Stanford Law School. He is a member of several industry Advisory Boards, including the Cleantech Venture Network (Chairman), the Clean-Tech Investors Summit (2005 Conference Chairman), the Energy Investors Forum (2004 Conference Chairman), the Energy Venture Fair, the China-US Energy Efficiency Alliance, the Southern California Tech Coast Alliance, the Golden Capital Network, the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs (FWE), and the Comerica Venture Capital Advisory Board. He also serves on the Education Committee of the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA).

Ira received his JD/MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business and Stanford Law School, where he was an Associate Editor of Stanford Law Review. He holds a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude.

Mr. John Rockwell, Managing Director, DFJ Element. John has more than 15 years of experience investing in venture capital and developing companies commercializing applications of advanced materials and over 20 years of financial investment experience. Prior to joining DFJ Element, John was a Partner at Advent International and managed the firm's California office. John joined Advent in 1996 and his investments have ranged by stage of company and area of focus. He has invested broadly across the CleanTech sectors with an emphasis on advanced materials, information technology and electronics.

Before Advent, John spent 7 years at Materia Ventures Associates, investing in and managing early-stage companies that were commercializing advanced materials technologies. He also served as CEO of Luxar Corporation, a manufacturer of CO2 lasers for the medical market and as President of SSC, Inc., a manufacturer of high performance ceramic oxide materials used in superconductors, fuel cells, catalysts and other applications.  John also held various positions at 3M Corporation in its Acquisitions and Business Development Department.

John received a BS in Business Administration from Michigan Technological University; and an MBA from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.

Mr. Bryant Tong, General Partner, Nth Power. Bryant Tong joined Nth Power in 2001 as a Managing Director. Previously, Mr. Tong was founder, President and CEO of Pacific Venture Capital, LLC (PVC), the venture capital arm of PG&E. At PVC, Mr. Tong led investments in the energy and telecommunications sectors.

Prior to joining PVC, Mr. Tong co-founded ReSourcePhoenix, Inc., a public company that pioneered the use of the Internet to help businesses outsource their IT and accounting operations. As President and COO, he planned business strategy, sales and marketing and was responsible for all day to day operations.   Previous to ReSourcePhoenix, Mr. Tong also served as part of the senior management group at Phoenix American, Inc.   While at Phoenix American, Mr. Tong worked with Phoenix Growth Capital (PGC), which invested in over 200 venture capital-backed companies by providing venture lease financing.

Mr. Tong also served for four years as a senior member of the audit staff of Ernst and Young. He was responsible for the preparation of interim and year-end audits, SEC reporting requirements and internal control reviews. Clients included venture capital firms and large financial institutions.

Mr. Tong earned a BS in accounting from the University of California at Berkeley. Mr. Tong is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and also serves as a member of several industry advisory boards including the Energy Venture Fair, the Chinese/U.S. Energy Efficiency Alliance and the Golden Capital Network.

Mr. Raheel Zia, Vice President, Goldman, Sachs & Co. Raz is a Vice President in the San Francisco office of Goldman Sachs Principal Investment Area. He focuses on opportunities in the software and services sectors. Current investments include Wall Street On Demand and Accelergy. Prior to Goldman Sachs, Raz was with Bessemer Venture Partners, based in the MA office, where he was an early investor in HyperRoll, GoTV Networks and Streambase. From 2000-2002, he was Founder & CEO of Knumi, a wireless applications company which he led until its sale to Houghton-Mifflin. Raz has held product management & engineering roles at AltaVista and DEC, and he was also a member of the Technology Investment Banking team at Citigroup.

Raz holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and engineering degrees from London University ( M.Sc.) and Manchester University (B.Eng ). He is also a qualified CPA.
